SADCO ADDS FEEDERS ON ITALIAN CAGE SITE

A SEAFISH farm is now in successful operation off the coast of south-west Italy, using sturdy submersible cages, feeding system and other components supplied and installed by Russian company Sadco-Shelf of St Petersburg.
Garum srl was established in 1996 to produce seabass and seabream in cages in the Gulf of Policastro, just south of the town of Maratea. It is also developing the culture of the Mediterranean fish delicacy spigola.
There are six 1200 cu metre cages and the production target is 100 to 120 tonnes a year.
The Russian company’s cage system was introduced in 1985, and has since been upgraded and refined, drawing on experience in operation. It works in waters 30 m and more deep, and cages are available in capacities from 1200 to 2000 cu m.
Fish in them is grown underwater, which reduces risk of damage by surface debris and permits farming in stormy areas with waves up to 15 m. A special mooring system provides for reliable positioning of the cages, and Sadco now also supplies an efficient feeding system designed to work normally in all weather conditions.
Garum is managed by Carlo De Gregorio, a graduate of Stirling University’s Institute of Aquaculture. The farm was installed in the autumn of 1997 and stood up well to winter storms at the exposed site.
     Initially, feed was distributed manually.
Explaining why, Leonid Bugrov of Sadco-Shelf says it was difficult for Garum to believe that the computerised offshore system offered by the Russians could operate.
“It is very new and still unique in cage farming”, he says.
Then Garum initiated a test using one cage.
After it was seen to work successfully, the feeding system was installed this year on all six cages.
